SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State University football team may not be able to afford a third conference loss this season.
That makes this week’s matchup at No. 8-ranked Central Washington a must-win game.
Central Washington has emerged as the favorite to win the Lone Star Conference after its win over UT Permian Basin earlier this month.
ASU began the year as the defending champ and the preseason pick to win the conference again. Back-to-back losses, however, to UTPB and Texas A&M-Kingsville likely ended those chances.
Yet the Rams’ playoff hopes are still very much alive, and their postseason fate could be decided by how they fare this weekend about 1,800 miles from home.
Last year, ASU held off Central Washington 17-16 in San Angelo when the Wildcats missed a game-tying extra point in the final minute.
The Rams are back up to No. 16 in the nation after a pair of convincing wins over Midwestern State (48-28) and Sul Ross State (62-0). ASU had fallen from No. 6 down to No. 21 after its two losses.
A win over No. 8 Central Washington could potentially vault the Rams back into the Top 10, and it would certainly be a strong win to put on their resume for the playoff selection committee.
ASU also still has an outside chance to tie for the LSC title. With a 4-2 conference record, the Rams are in a tie for third place with UTPB and West Texas A&M. Central Washington (6-0) and Western Oregon (5-1) have the top two spots.
The Rams have two games remaining after this week against Western Oregon and West Texas A&M. Central Washington and Western Oregon will also play each other in the last week, so there’s still a lot to be determined.
ASU and Central Washington will play at 8 p.m. (CST) Saturday in Ellensburg, Washington.
