SAN ANGELO, TX — After ending a two-game slide, the Angelo State University football team is moving back up the national rankings.
The Rams climbed two spots to No. 19 in this week’s NCAA Division II poll by the American Football Coaches Association.
ASU is coming off a 48-28 homecoming win over Midwestern State last week, which followed back-to-back losses.
The defeats were all the more surprising considering ASU had won 14 straight conference games before the losses.
The Rams’ hopes of repeating as Lone Star Conference champs are slim, but they’re still very much in contention to earn a playoff spot.
They’re 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the LSC standings heading into this week’s game at Sul Ross State.
After that, important games loom down the stretch against Central Washington, Western Oregon and West Texas A&M.
The only home game remaining for ASU is Nov. 8 against Western Oregon.
Central Washington remains the LSC’s highest-ranked team at No. 8 after it survived a 24-21 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
UT Permian fell to No. 23 after a 31-28 loss to Western Oregon.
Ferris State remains No. 1 with all 30 first-place votes, followed by No. 2 Harding, No. 3 West Florida, No. 4 Kutztown and No. 5 Augustana (South Dakota).
