SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State sophomore Margaux Rene will represent the Rambelles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup in Rome, Georgia, beginning Thursday, Oct. 16, and continuing through Saturday, Oct. 19.
Rene earned her spot in the national tournament after an impressive performance at the ITA South Central Regional, where she entered as the No. 3 seed and advanced to the finals.
She opened regional play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Luisa Moraes of UT Tyler, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Nil Kalkavan in the Round of 32. Rene continued her dominant run with a straight-set win over Oshini Hearth of Lubbock Christian to reach the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinal round, Rene defeated Alessia Terlizzi of St. Mary’s, 6-2, 6-0, before taking down top-seeded Yona Bancarel, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals. Rene’s bid for the regional title came up just short, as she fell 0-6, 5-7 in the final to Selin Sepken.
Rene was later selected for the ITA Cup after one of the regional winners declined an invitation. As the South Central Regional finalist, she was next in line to fill the open spot.
Rene will face Alina Kupfer of Point Loma Nazarene in the Round of 16 on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 11:30 a.m.
