FRISCO, TX — Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has been fined $250,000 by the NFL for making an “inadvertent” obscene gesture toward fans during Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Video footage circulating on social media showed Jones briefly flashing his middle finger following Dak Prescott’s fourth touchdown pass, which extended the Cowboys’ lead to 37–14 in their 37–22 win over the Jets.
On Tuesday, Jones described the gesture as “unfortunate” and insisted it was unintentional. Speaking on Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan, he explained that he intended to signal approval to Cowboys fans amid the excitement of the score. He said that, in the moment, the motion was misinterpreted.
The fine is subject to appeal by Jones. Under NFL rules, fines for such conduct by team executives are enforced to maintain decorum and the league’s image.
This is not the first instance of an NFL owner being fined for inappropriate conduct toward fans. Last year, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink toward Jaguars fans; in 2009, Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 after making an obscene gesture during a celebration.
