Lake View Chiefs Let Game Slip Away Late in Loss to Burnet

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs weren’t able to hang onto a halftime lead Friday and lost 46-36 to Burnet at San Angelo Stadium.

The Chiefs led 29-22 after a back-and-forth first half, but Burnet scored the next 24 points as Lake View’s high-flying offense didn’t find the end zone again until the final minutes of the game.

It was the second consecutive loss for Lake View after a 4-0 start to the season.

The Chiefs will try to right the ship next week in their nondistrict finale at Brownfield.

Burnet rolled to a 43-point win over Lake View last year, but the Bulldogs didn’t take the lead for good Friday until a field goal with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter that put them ahead 32-29.

"We want to play good ball clubs like that, because it's going to prepare us down the road," Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. "We've just got to clean up some things and we'll be OK."

Nothing seemed to go right for Lake View in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs missed a game-tying field goal attempt from 34 yards out on the first play of the quarter.

Then, after the Chiefs forced Burnet to punt on the Bulldogs' next drive, the punt hit the leg of a Lake View player and was recovered by Burnet.

The Bulldogs scored two plays later on a 25-yard run by Peyton Lopez for a 39-29 lead, and the Chiefs never recovered from the momentum swing.

Burnet delivered the knockout punch with 5:43 remaining on a 56-yard TD pass from Fisher Powell to Matthew Williams for a 46-29 advantage.

Lake View was finally able to score again with 2:52 remaining, but that was the last time the Chiefs saw the ball.

"Obviously, we're not happy with the way it ended," Guevara said. "But (Burnet was) making plays, and we've got to make them, too."

Lake View quarterback Chris Alvizo was 22-of-34 passing for 253 yards and five touchdowns, and he added 11 carries for 69 rushing yards.

Izaiah Rios had 19 carries for 122 yards to lead the Chiefs on the ground.

Braylon White had seven catches for 104 yards and two TDs, while Chris Rodela had six catches for 58 yards and two TDs. Gabriel Alvarez also had a TD grab.

Lake View's offense has scored 33 or more points in every game this year, but the defense continues to allow games to turn into shootouts, and they've struggled especially against the run.

Burnet running back Isaiah Coronado had 20 carries for 213 yards and three TDs, while Lopez contributed 11 carries for 97 yards and a TD.

Burnet improved to 2-4 and will begin play in District 4-4A Division I at home next week against Marble Falls.

Lake View won't play its district opener in 3-4A until Oct. 24 at Pecos.

Depending on how the teams finish in their respective districts, there's a possibility they could see each other again in the first round of the playoffs.
