SAN ANGELO, TX— The Lake View Chiefs are riding high after a back-and-forth win over Lubbock last week but have a possible trap game against the Levelland Lobos this Friday at San Angelo Stadium.
The Chiefs battled last week and every time they got knocked down, they responded in a big way. Now, Lake View is 4-0 going into a game against Levelland, a team that has had their number the last few seasons.
The Lobos are 2-2, dropping games to Dalhart (55-15) and to Idalou (32-13). Dalhart is 3-1 this year, losing to Perryton 27-26, and Idalou is 2-2 with losses to Sweetwater and Lubbock-Cooper Liberty.
Levelland has wins over Pecos (41-21) and Brownfield (50-0).
Lobo quarterback Ethan Salazar has thrown for 550 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Sophomore Bryson Golightly is a Swiss army knife, playing at quarterback, running back, and receiver on offense. Golightly has rushed four times for 127 yards but has done damage at receiver where he has caught 11 passes for 207 yards and three TDs.
Another sophomore, running back Noah Martin, is the Lobos' lead back with 36 carries for 270 yards and two TDs. Junior back Jake Potter is the backup and has rushed 26 times for 191 yards and two scores.
Senior Kaden Brogden is the leading receiver for Levelland has 212 yards and four scores.
As for the Chiefs, Izaiah Rios went off last week for 269 yards and four touchdowns, giving him 593 yards and 11 TDs on the ground.
Chris Alvizo was very productive last week, going 20-of-27 passing for 269 yards and two TDs. He also protected the ball by not throwing any interceptions. Nick Leyva caught six passes for 114 yards, while Braylon White caught five passes for 76 yards and a TD, and Chris Rodela had 37 yards and a score.
The War Party Defense didn’t force any turnovers last week, but Isaac Monreal had 10 tackles and Evan Gallegos followed with seven tackles. Rauly Roman had a sack and a tackle for loss, and Conner Williams also had a tackle for loss.
That is one thing the Chiefs have over Levelland this season is their ability to force turnovers. Until the Lubbock game, they had averaged three turnovers a game.
Don’t let the 2-2 record fool you, Levelland can bring it and has brought it against the Chiefs in the past. Since 2022, Lake View and Levelland have matched up in nondistrict, and the Lobos have won all three games. The Lobos shut out the Chiefs 17-0 in 2021, then won 32-13 in 2023, and 44-26 in 2024.
This Chiefs team feels different, but they cannot take Levelland lightly. Should they beat the Lobos, the Pride of the Northside has a decent chance to hit district play undefeated, though a potentially tough matchup with Burnet awaits next week.
Lake View takes on Levelland at 7 p.m. Friday at San Angelo Stadium.
