SAN ANGELO, TX — Coming off the farthest NCAA playoff run in program history, the Angelo State University volleyball team will open its season at home this weekend with the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational.
The Rambelles, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation in NCAA Division II, will host Arkansas-Monticello at 11 a.m. Friday at the Junell Center, followed by a 5:30 p.m. match against Adams State.
ASU will then play Southern Nazarene at 11 a.m. Saturday, with No. 23-ranked Colorado Mesa waiting at 7:30 p.m.
The Belles went 32-3 last year and reached the national semifinals for the first time in program history.
ASU lost three All-American players from that team — Adeline Ortman, Evelyn Torres and Caleigh Enax — but they bring back two others, Madi Parrish and Demi Carter, along with numerous other returners.
ASU’s newcomers include freshman Journi Jones, a two-time district setter of the year at San Angelo Central.
The Belles are expected to have nearly 3,000 elementary school students in attendance for their season-opening match against Arkansas-Monticello.
Last year, ASU set a Lone Star Conference record with 3,315 fans in attendance for their season opener.
“We better be ready to compete,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “It’s the first match of the year, and we’re going to have about 3,000 I’m sure nice and quiet elementary students, possibly all sugared up and ready to go.”
ASU won’t have another home appearance after this weekend until Sept. 26 against St. Mary’s.
