Friday Night Rewind: Best Games, Biggest Wins and Top Performers From Last Week

Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:

Best game: San Angelo Lake View-Fort Stockton

While the final score in Lake View’s 42-7 win was lopsided, this was a one-score game in the final minute of the second quarter. That’s when Kentrell Johnson returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown to change everything, giving the Chiefs a 21-7 lead at halftime. Lake View then put the game away with some big plays in the third quarter to complete a thrilling opening night for Chiefs fans.

Biggest win: Junction

In a matchup of Top 25 teams from Class 2A Division II, No. 12-ranked Junction posted a dominant win over No. 17 Goldthwaite to start the season. The Eagles are coming off their winningest season in program history last year after going 12-2 and reaching the state quarterfinals. They look poised for another fun year.

Biggest surprise: Ozona’s Christian Villarreal

The thought of Ozona running back Christian Villarreal topping last year’s performance against McCamey — when he rushed for 361 yards and 6 TDs — seemed just about impossible. Yet somehow he managed to do it with a 371-yard, 7-TD performance against the Badgers in Ozona’s 65-0 win last Friday. Villarreal rushed for over 1,400 yards in nine games last year, and he’s off to another ridiculous start.

Case for the defense: Sonora

Of all the shutouts we saw in the opening week of the season, the Sonora Broncos may have had the most impressive one. Sonora’s 40-0 win was against a Miles team that, though inexperienced, is led by a strong quarterback in Liam Yancy who led the Bulldogs to an 8-3 record last fall. Armani Coronado and Jayden Welborn each returned interceptions for touchdowns to highlight the defense’s performance.

Strong in defeat: San Angelo TLCA

The TLCA Eagles had a rough season last year in which they allowed at least 54 points in every game. On Friday, their program showed some serious progress in a 28-12 loss to Tahoka. The Eagles are just two years removed from a 5-6 season, and being competitive again like they were Friday is an encouraging sign that they’re headed in the right direction.
