OXNARD, CA — The Dallas Cowboys have signed one of their best players to an extension.
The Dallas Cowboys signed tight end Jake Ferguson to a 4-year, $52 million extension. Ferguson had a breakout season in 2023 with 71 receptions, 761 yards and five touchdowns, but he had a down year last season with 59 receptions, 494 yards and no touchdowns.
Ferguson has had some athletic catches and has shown great ability on the field.
Of course, this was not the signing Cowboy fans expected. All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons is entering the final year of his contract and has made some headlines seemingly calling out ownership for taking their time.
Fans have been critical of the front office as well. Waiting to get your best players signed only leaves room for other players on other teams to sign record-breaking deals. That drives up the price of your players. The other side of this coin is maybe on the player waiting for these other guys to sign to get the most out of their team.
The focus is on Parsons, but in reality, a few very good players on Dallas’ roster are coming up on their contracts as well. Cornerback DaRon Bland, who holds an NFL record for pick-sixes in a season (5), is in a contract year. Kicker Brandon Aubrey is as well and Tyler Smith, who had held his own on the offensive line, could also get one.
Also in a contract year is newly acquired wide receiver George Pickens, who is expected to have an incredible year across from CeeDee Lamb and with Dak Prescott at quarterback.
In the end, these contracts will get done. The Cowboys are not about to let Parsons walk in free agency. It’s just a matter of time.
