FRISCO, TX — The Big 12 Conference held its annual football Media Days at the Star in Frisco on Tuesday, July 8. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire gave his thoughts on his football team ahead of the season, as well as answering questions directly from the media.
Watch McGuire's panel below:
"We have had a great spring, we've had a great summer, and we cannot wait for camp and the season to start," McGuire said.
One of the reasons Texas Tech is excited for next season is for the return of Senior linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who was recently named the Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
"He is such a rockstar," McGuire said. "When it comes to our culture and our building and the way we work, he's a pro."
Rodriguez led the Big 12 in total tackles last season with 126 and averaged 9.7 tackles per game. He also had three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and an interception in just his junior campaign.

Texas Tech put the college football world on notice this offseason when the Red Raiders landed several big-name transfers in the portal, with Lee Hunter (DL, UCF), David Bailey (EDGE, Stanford), Romello Height (EDGE, Georgia Tech), and Howard Sampson (OT, North Carolina), to name a few. The new names on the defensive line were enough to make several heads turn, as the Red Raiders claimed to be one of the top transfer classes in the country.
"It's been a fun offseason," McGuire said of the transfer class. "We were really aggressive when it came to the portal and meeting some of the needs for the football team. I know there are a lot of expectations on this team. But we just see them as opportunities."
Texas Tech opens up the 2025 season at home on Saturday, Aug. 30, against Arkansas Pine Bluff.
