OZONA, TX — Jason Pitts has been named the new head football coach and athletic director at Ozona High School.
The news was first reported by Texas Football’s Matt Stepp.
Pitts comes from Class 3A Division II New Diana, where he spent three years in the same roles.
New Diana was 1-9 the year before Pitts arrived. After going 2-8 his first season, the Eagles excelled with records of 9-3 in 2023 and 11-1 last year.
Pitts’ coaching career began at Argyle, where he was an assistant on the 2013 state-title winning team.
He also had stints at Frankston, Jacksonville, Callisburg and Tyler Legacy.
Pitts graduated from Troy High School, located between Waco and Temple. He attended college at Texas A&M and Texas State before graduating from North Texas.
Pitts will replace Jarryd Taylor, who was 28-26 in five years at Ozona. Taylor left last month to accept a job as the defensive coordinator in Alice.
The Lions went 7-4 last season and finished in third place in District 3-2A Division I.
Among Ozona’s returning starters are running back Christian Villarreal, who rushed for 1,438 yards and 17 touchdowns in nine games last year.
