OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The Texas Tech softball team continued its storybook season Thursday with a 4-3 win over Texas in Game 2 of the Women’s College World Series.
Tech’s victory forces a winner-take-all Game 3, which will be broadcast at 7 p.m. Friday on ESPN.
The Longhorns threatened to steal the national title with a late comeback in the final inning Thursday.
Texas scored two runs to pull within 4-3 and had a runner on third base before Tech’s ace pitcher, NiJaree Canady, finally locked down the win with her sixth strikeout of the game.
Canady, the $1 million transfer from Stanford, has thrown every pitch for the Red Raiders during their first-ever appearance at the World Series.
She shut down Texas for five innings Thursday before the Longhorns broke through with a home run in the sixth inning by Mia Scott.
Tech took a 2-0 lead the previous inning when the Red Raiders capitalized on Texas miscues. A hit batter scored the first run, and a wild pitch scored another.
Texas trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Tech tacked on two more insurance runs, which proved to be important.
Canady will step into the pitcher’s circle one more time Friday, while Texas will likely counter with Game 1 winner Teagan Kavan. The Longhorns pieced Game 2 together with four pitchers, including Kavan for two outs.
Whichever Lone Star State team wins Friday, it will be their first national title in program history.
