Texas Tech, Texas Win Openers at Softball World Series

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The Texas Tech and Texas softball teams each made some history Thursday during their opening games at the NCAA College World Series.

No. 12-ranked Texas Tech won its first-ever game on the sport’s biggest stage with a 1-0 win over Ole Miss.

Meanwhile, No. 6 Texas defeated No. 3 Florida 3-0 as Joley Mitchell hit a pair of solo home runs to become the first Texas woman to hit multiple HRs in a World Series game.

Both Texas schools will be off Friday as they enjoy life in the winner’s bracket. Texas will next face No. 2 Oklahoma at 2 p.m. Saturday on ABC, while Tech will play No. 9 UCLA at 6 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.

Though Tech was making its first appearance at the World Series, the Red Raiders are led by transfer pitcher NiJaree Canady, who made previous trips with Stanford.

Canady fired a two-hit shutout Thursday with 10 strikeouts. She retired the first 16 hitters she faced. She improved to 31-5 in the pitcher’s circle.

Tech (51-12) has now shut out its opponents in 26 of its 51 wins this season, adding on to a school record the Red Raiders set weeks ago.

Texas pitcher Teagan Kavan also threw a two-hit shutout Thursday to improve to 25-5.

The Longhorns (52-11) have a mountain to climb, however, against Oklahoma, which has won four straight national titles and swept all three games against Texas this year.
