Editor's note: Jeff Jones' contract was renewed at Garden City. However, he has been reassigned. A previous version of this story contained incorrect information.
GARDEN CITY, TX — After a successful 10-year run as Garden City’s head football coach and athletic director, Jeff Jones has been reassigned.
Jones was 81-38 with the Bearkats and guided the team to the state quarterfinals four times.
In 2018, Garden City went 13-1 and lost in the state semifinals to eventual champion McLean.
However, Garden City went 3-7 in 2023 and missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 years.
The Bearkats were 4-6 last year and missed the playoffs again, though it was a rebuilding year with only three players returning with any varsity experience.
Garden City still managed a signature win over Robert Lee and only lost by 12 points to undefeated Buena Vista to keep them the Bearkats out of the postseason.
Whoever inherits next year’s squad will have one of the area’s most exciting young players in running back Brody Walts, who had a breakout sophomore campaign.
Jones, who spent five years as Marfa’s head coach before he was hired by Garden City, said he’s not sure where he’s headed next of if he will remain in Garden City.
