SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State baseball team overcame a five-run deficit Saturday evening to storm back for a 12-9 win over St. Edward’s in the Lone Star Conference Tournament final.
ASU trailed 8-3 after St. Edward’s scored six times in the top of the fifth inning.
The Rams were still behind 8-4 when they erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-8 lead.
ASU still had to get out of a serious jam after St. Edward’s loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, but Clayton Broeder came out of the bullpen and struck out three straight batters to end the threat.
The comeback win was a fitting end to the tournament for the Rams, who lost their first game before fighting their way back through the loser’s bracket with four straight wins.
ASU became the first team to accomplish the feat since the current LSC Tournament format was adopted in 2012.
Seven Rams were named to the all-tournament team, led by third baseman Chase Pendley, who was named MVP.
ASU, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II, improved to 45-8. St. Edward’s fell to 36-21.
Next up for the Rams is the South Central Regional Tournament on May 15-17. The tournament field will be announced at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
