DALLAS, TX — The Dallas Cowboys have made another trade this offseason to acquire an offensive weapon.
On Wednesday, May, 7, the Cowboys traded a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for wide receiver George Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick.
There were rumblings of a trade for a wide receiver that involved Dallas since before the 2025 NFL Draft. Also, fans were upset that the Cowboys did not draft one. Now, they have a No. 2 receiver to pair up with CeeDee Lamb.
Pickens is no slouch. Since being drafted in the 2022 NFL Draft in the second round, Pickens has 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns, which means he’s averaging 947 yards and four touchdowns each season. With Lamb drawing the focus of coverage, Pickens should have his best year statistically.
Pickens also has not had stability at the quarterback position in Pittsburgh awith Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Mitchell Trubisky, Kyle Allen, and Mason Rudolph throwing him the ball. With a healthy, which is a key word here, healthy Dak Prescott, Pickens should fit the obvious need for pass catchers in Dallas.
The one thing about this trade that seemed unavoidable was trading a third-round pick next year. With all the players Dallas has already signed and still needing to sign Micah Parsons, Tyler Smith, and DaRon Bland, Pickens might be a one-year rental. But Dallas was in serious need of a No. 2 receiver and, with the players available, Pickens was probably one of the best.
Unlike the Joe Milton trade, this trade carries a little more risk with a top 100 pick on the line, but Pickens doesn’t have to come in and put up 1,500 yards and 10-plus touchdowns. With that in mind, the potential reward is extremely high in this instance.
