No. 8 Rambelles Head to the South Central Regional

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State will continue its postseason run this week in Canyon, opening the NCAA Division II South Central Regional against Colorado Mesa at 5 p.m. Thursday on the campus of West Texas A&M.

The No. 8-ranked Rambelles (44-12) enter the regional as the No. 3 seed after reaching the Lone Star Conference semifinals last week, defeating Eastern New Mexico 5-1 before falling 6-4 to eventual champion UT Tyler.

Angelo State is 7-2 all-time against Colorado Mesa and 2-1 in NCAA Tournament play. The teams last met in the postseason in 2021, when the Mavericks eliminated ASU with a 9-2 win. However, Angelo State defeated Mesa 6-1 earlier this season behind three RBIs from Laylonna Applin and a two-run double by Ashton McMillan.

Applin leads the Rambelles with a .436 average and ranks third nationally in total bases (149). She also leads the team in doubles, triples, home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.

Senior pitcher Cheyenne Floyd, a First Team All-LSC and All-Academic selection, anchors the staff with a 25-6 record, 1.69 ERA, and 179 strikeouts in 161.2 innings. Opponents are hitting just .178 against her this season.

ASU boasts six players hitting above .300 and ranks among the nation’s top defensive teams with a .977 fielding percentage, third-best in Division II.

The Rambelles are hitting .313 as a team with a .508 slugging percentage and average 6.3 runs per game. They are 6-1 in neutral-site games this season but have gone just 2-8 in their last 10 games played in Canyon.

Three Rambelles — Floyd, McMillan, and Lauren De La Cruz — were named to the LSC All-Tournament Team. Head coach Travis Scott recorded his 1,000th career win earlier this season and has won all but 101 of those games at Angelo State.
