Wall, Sonora Boys Atop Leaderboard After Day 1 of State Golf Tournament

 

AUSTIN, TX — The Wall and Sonora high school boys golf teams are each in the lead after Day 1 of the UIL Golf State Championships on Monday.

Wall shot a team score of 305 for a five-shot lead over the field in the Class 3A tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Across town, Sonora had a team score of 314 for a three-shot lead in the Class 2A tournament at Lions Municipal Golf Course.

Both teams have a crowded leaderboard to deal with in the second and final round Tuesday.

For Wall, eight schools are within 16 shots of the Hawks.

Pottsboro is five shots back at 310, followed by Gunter (311), Maypearl (312), Diboll (315), Cameron Yoe (315), Blanco (316), Jim Ned (320) and Vanderbilt Industrial (321).

Wall doesn’t have any golfers in the top 10, but the Hawks had rock-solid consistency, led by Maxwell Wymore’s score of 75, which has him in a tie for 12th place.

Other Wall scores included Kasen Mull (76), Stratten Abel (76), Hayden Barnes (78) and Cannon Willard (82).

Cameron Yoe’s Hayden Bailey fired a 71 to take the lead in the medalist standings. Two players had a 72, while three had a 73.

For Sonora, the Broncos are looking to repeat their state-title run from last season.

They’ll have to fend off four teams that are within 11 shots. Lipan and Corsicana Mildred are each just three shots behind Sonora.

New Home is seven shots back at 321, followed by Lindsay (325), Mason (337) and Hawley (337). San Saba is in ninth place at 348.

Sonora’s Weston Fisher had the Broncos’ top score with a 71, which has him in fourth place. 

Defending champion Walt Thompson from Goldthwaite is out in front with a 68, one shot ahead of Ty Chrisman from Centerville.

Other scores for Sonora included Dylan Ford (73), Juan Castillo (83), Jayden Welborn (87) and Christian Martinez (93).

At the 1A state tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander, the Robert Lee boys are in fifth place after the opening round.

The Steers shot a team score of 366, which was 29 shots off the leading score of 337 by Wildorado.

D’Hanis is in second place at 347, followed by Abbott (352) and May (362).

Robert Lee was led by Brenner Sherwood, who is tied for 12th after carding an 83. Other scores for the Steers included Jaxon Tavarez (93), Denver O’Dell (94), Max Garcia (96) and Levi Bailey (104).

Irion County’s Seth Sanford is in fourth place in the medalist after shooting a 78.

Texline’s Bo Bradley and Wildorado’s Hunter Corman are tied for the first-round lead at 74.
