Lake View’s Kentrell Johnson Qualifies for State Track Meet in 200

LUBBOCK, TX — San Angelo Lake View’s Kentrell Johnson is headed to the state track meet after a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash Saturday at the Region I-4A championships at Texas Tech University.

Johnson ran a time of 21.77 seconds, which was just .07 seconds behind the winning time of Imanol Marquez from Dumas.

The Lake View junior was even faster during Friday’s prelims, when he tied for the fastest time at 21.40.

Now Johnson is heading to Austin to compete at the UIL Track and Field State Meet on May 1 at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Only the top two finishers from each of the four regions in Texas advance to the state meet, along with a wild card for the best third-place finisher.

At the Region I-6A meet in Arlington, San Angelo Central’s Tu’uta Kalamafoni took fourth place in the discus with a throw of 160 feet, 8 inches.

Central’s Trey Steele was sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 14-0.

On the girls side, Central’s Hanna Zwiebel, who had a dominant season in the 800, saw her run at state end with a seventh-place finish.

Zwiebel’s time of 2:18.52 was well off her school-record time of 2:15.46 she ran recently.

However, Prosper’s Nora Ryan set a blazing pace with a time of 2:10.67 to win the race, and it took a 2:13.53 to take third.

Central’s other regional qualifiers all failed to make the finals.
