MASON, TX — Mason ISD has posted the position of head football coach and athletic director on its school website, opening up one of the more high-profile 2A jobs in Texas.
Michael McLeod, who had held both positions since 2019, will not be returning, according to Texas Football’s Matt Stepp, who first reported the news of the job posting.
On March 26, Mason posted the athletic director job with possible head coaching duties, which confirmed some type of shakeup was in the works.
McLeod is still listed as the AD on Mason’s website, while his wife, Kyndel, is still listed as a teacher and coach.
McLeod’s departure from Mason is surprising considering the consistent success the football program and athletic department has seen during his tenure.
In six seasons as the Punchers football coach, McLeod had a 58-16 record, including an 11-2 mark last season.
However, Mason has failed to advance past the third round of the playoffs in that time.
McLeod was born and raised in Mason, attending school there from kindergarten through his senior year. He graduated in 2005.
McLeod went on to play for the Angelo State football team.
Mason hasn’t had a losing season since 2007, and the job will surely attract plenty of applicants eager to take over the Class 2A program in the Hill Country.
