SAN ANGELO, TX — A season-high five errors and 10 runners left on base cost the No. 1-ranked Angelo State baseball team as it fell to No. 24 St. Edward's 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the loss, the Rams’ 12-game winning streak was snapped as they fell to 30-7 while the Hilltoppers jumped to 28-13.
The Rams scored first when Chase Pendley reached base on a fielder's choice and later stole second before Weston Valasek doubled to left-center field. The Hilltoppers responded in the top of the third when they strung together a walk and a bunt single before a homer gave StEU its first lead of the game. The Blue and Gold answered in the ensuing half inning when Pendley scored on a passed ball to make it a 3-2 game.
St. Edward's doubled their score in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of two errors and a walk to score three runs off Rams' starter Alizaeh Gutierrez and reliever Luke Olson.
Despite his effort, Gutierrez suffered his first loss of the 2025 campaign after he gave 5.1 innings of work where he allowed five runs (three earned) off five hits and three walks while striking out two.
In the top of the ninth, a single and a fielding error put runners aboard for a two-RBI double to left-center field which brought the game to its final score as the Rams got set down in order in the final three innings to end the ballgame.
The Rams will look to secure the series win at home at 1 p.m. Monday.
