San Angelo Rodeo to Showcase World Champions, Local Competitors

SAN ANGELO, TX — The 93rd annual San Angelo Rodeo is back with another star-studded lineup.

Once again, some of the biggest names in the sport will be in San Angelo this month, including last year’s all-around world champion, Shad Mayfield.

In fact, all but one defending world champion will be competing here, with the exception of 2024 bull riding champ Josh Frost. The second cousin of bull riding legend Lane Frost is recovering from rotator cuff surgery.

The rodeo begins at 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Communications Coliseum, 50 E. 43rd St., and ends with the finals April 18.

The world champions that will be here include Kassie Mowry (barrel racing), Riley Webb (tie-down roping), Ryder Wright (saddle bronc), Wesley Thorp (team roping - heeler), Tyler Wade (team roping - header), J.D. Struxness (steer wrestling) and Dean Thompson (bareback).

San Angelo will also have some hometown favorites to root for with tie-down ropers Ty Harris, Joel Harris and Dylan Hancock, all of whom finished in the top 10 in the world last year.

Ty Harris was fourth, Hancock was sixth and Joel Harris was seventh at the National Finals Rodeo in December in Las Vegas, where they combined to win six of the 10 rounds.

It was the sixth straight appearance at the NFR for Ty Harris, but it was the first time Joel Harris and Hancock qualified.

Hancock also won the title at the San Angelo Rodeo last year.

The small town of Sonora will also be represented with three competitors in this year’s rodeo — tie-down ropers Word Hudson and Craig Leonard, and steer wrestler Sam Powers.

The Concho Valley had numerous other competitors competing in slack this week in an attempt to qualify for one of the rodeo’s main performances.

There will be 11 performances leading up to the finals April 18, when the top 12 competitors in each event vie for the title.

The all-star Cinch Chute-Out is April 19, while the Tejano Day Extravaganza will conclude the rodeo’s shows on April 20.
