No. 7 Angelo State Set for Home-and-Home Series With Lubbock Christian

 

SAN ANGELO, TX – The No. 7 Angelo State softball team continues Lone Star Conference action this week with a home-and-home doubleheader series against Lubbock Christian. The Rambelles travel to Lubbock on Thursday before hosting the Lady Chaps on Sunday at Mayer Softball Field.

Thursday’s twin bill was moved up from Friday due to the threat of inclement weather in Lubbock. Sunday’s home games will also serve as Youth Sports Day. Children in uniform will receive free admission, while accompanying adults will be offered a discounted ticket. Additionally, children will be invited to run the bases following the conclusion of the doubleheader.

Angelo State (30-8, 21-7 LSC) enters the series ranked No. 7 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Rambelles are coming off a dominant weekend on the road, sweeping four games from UT Permian Basin and Sul Ross State while outscoring their opponents 42-8. It marks their second consecutive week ranked seventh and their highest national ranking since 2022.

Senior pitcher Cheyenne Floyd has continued her impressive season, owning a 16-5 record with a 1.52 ERA. She has struck out 111 batters over 101.1 innings and is holding opponents to a .173 batting average. Floyd ranks second in program history in career ERA (1.96) and is tied for first in opponent batting average (.202). Her 392 strikeouts are second all-time at ASU.

Last Friday, head coach Travis Scott secured his 1,000th career victory, becoming the first coach to reach the milestone entirely within the Lone Star Conference. Scott has recorded 897 of those wins at Angelo State.

  • Laylonna Applin leads ASU with a .483 batting average and ranks second nationally in total bases (116)

  • Applin also leads the team in extra-base hits, RBI, slugging percentage, and OBP

  • Rambelles have turned 19 double plays (9th nationally)

Scouting Lubbock Christian

Lubbock Christian (23-15, 14-14 LSC) enters the weekend having gone 13-4 at home but just 6-10 on the road. The Lady Chaps are 1-5 against ranked teams this season, with a run-rule win over then-No. 20 Oklahoma Christian as their lone top-25 victory.

LCU hits .306 as a team and averages six runs per game, with Baylea Myers leading the way at .412 with 31 RBI. Yaya Kaaialii (.387) paces the team in OBP at .500, while Kendra Levesque leads in extra-base hits (20).

In the circle, the Lady Chaps hold a 3.66 ERA. Teoni Lamb (5-5, 3.67 ERA) leads the team with 68 strikeouts in 76.1 innings, while Emily Dix owns a team-best 7-4 record.

Angelo State holds a 12-7 all-time advantage over Lubbock Christian, including a 5-2 mark in Lubbock and 6-2 in San Angelo. The Rambelles took two of three in the regular season last year but fell 1-0 to LCU in the LSC Quarterfinals despite a 14-strikeout performance from Floyd.
