KINGSVILLE, TX – No. 4 Angelo State dominated both ends of a Sunday doubleheader, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville by scores of 7-0 and 12-1 at Nolan Ryan Field to open a four-game Lone Star Conference series.
With the victories, the Rams improved to 26-6 overall and 24-6 in conference play. The Javelinas dropped to 19-17 (18-16 LSC).
Game 1: Angelo State 7, Texas A&M-Kingsville 0
Senior right-hander Dax Dathe delivered a gem in the opener, retiring 16 consecutive batters and carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. After surrendering back-to-back singles to break up the no-hitter, Dathe closed the door to finish his first complete-game shutout in a Rams uniform.
The Rams capitalized on two TAMUK errors in the fifth inning to break open a scoreless contest. Justin Harris delivered a two-run single, and Weston Valasek added a two-run double to cap a five-run frame. Harris and Blake Wilhoite each added RBIs in the sixth to push the lead to 7-0.
Game 2: Angelo State 12, Texas A&M-Kingsville 1
Angelo State carried its offensive momentum into the second game, scoring three runs in the opening frame. The Rams added two more in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Valasek, who finished with four RBIs across both games.
Nick Wilson earned his sixth win of the season, tossing five innings and allowing just two hits and one run while striking out four.
Justin Harris broke the game open with a three-run home run in the fifth, and Tayten Tredaway added a two-run single to make it 11-1. Valasek drove in the final run with an RBI single in the seventh.
Relievers David Dressendorfer and Seth Foster combined to close out the win, allowing no hits over the final two innings.
The Rams and Javelinas will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader Monday beginning at 1 p.m.
