Receiver, Corner Positions Need Addressed in Dallas

DALLAS, TX — The Dallas Cowboys still have two glaring positions that need to be addressed.

The Cowboys have been unusually active in free agency, filling many spots on the roster, particularly at linebacker and defensive line. They had addressed the running back position by bringing in Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, but they really have not brought in a wide receiver to help CeeDee Lamb.

There are still options out there in free agency. Dallas could look to reunite with Amari Cooper or bring in some brotherly love by signing Stefon Diggs, the brother of cornerback Trevon Diggs. They did sign Parris Campbell, but Dallas hasn’t signed a legit option to play across from Lamb.

The Cowboys could be looking to the Draft, where they could have their pick of the litter. One of the most mocked players to the Cowboys, outside of running back Ashton Jeanty, is Arizona wide receiver Tet McMillan.

McMillan is a big-bodied pass catcher who has good body control and hands, where he compares to Mike Evans.

With both Lamb and McMillan, the Cowboys would have two legitimate receiving threats, and adding McMillan would allow the Cowboys to move Lamb across the offense. Tet would be a prototypical “X” receiver in the NFL.

There were questions about his top-end speed, but he just ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at his pro day. With his route running, McMillan should be a no-brainer for the Cowboys.

If a team is looking to move up and the Cowboys elect to trade back a couple picks, Texas’ Matthew Golden would bring a true speed receiver to America’s Team.

The Cowboys really could not do wrong with either McMillan or Golden.

Another position the Cowboys have not really addressed is cornerback. Yes, Kaiir Elam was acquired via trade from the Buffalo Bills, but the corner position in Dallas is a huge need. Trevon Diggs might not be with the team much longer, and he isn’t expected to play this season with a knee injury.

DaRon Bland is also coming up on the end of his contract and is coming off an injury.

That leaves second-year player Caelen Carson, Elam, Josh Butler, Andrew Booth Jr., and CJ Goodwin.

The Cowboys did interview a number of corners at the NFL Combine last month including Texas’ Jahdae Barron, Ole Miss’ Trey Amos, Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison, LSU’s Zy Alexander, and Kentucky’s Maxwell Hairston.

This is a decent draft for cornerbacks with other players like Michigan’s Will Johnson, Florida State’s Azareye’h Thomas, and Kansas State’s Jacob Parris.

There are still some corners available in free agency. Asante Samuel Jr., Mike Hilton, and bringing back Chidobe Awuzie or Stephon Gilmore make sense for the Cowboys.

For the receivers, this isn’t a super strong class so the Cowboys may snag one early then address corner.

The Cowboys did draft CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs in the same draft.

If they do draft McMillan or Golden in the first round, they could opt to draft Morrison, who was injured last season, which fits with what the Cowboys have done in past drafts. In 2015, Randy Gregory dropped to the second round after failing a drug test and in 2016, the Cowboys drafted Jaylon Smith, who fell due to a knee injury.

Taking a player who dealt with an injury but otherwise would be a high pick is a risk, as is taking a player who failed a drug test, but it could pay off. The Cowboys famously picked up La’El Collins when his name was dragged into a police investigation, dropping him out of the draft entirely.

The 2025 NFL Draft is April 24-26.
