Five Area Players Named to TABC All-State Girls Basketball Team

 

SUGAR LAND, TX — Five area girls have been named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-state team.

Only 20 girls were selected from each classification in Texas.

Christoval’s Halle Hughes, Mason’s Anna Marie Whitworth and San Saba’s Cinzlea Stanton were named to the Class 2A team.

Irion County’s Berkley Callaway and Richland Springs’ Flora Appleton were chosen for the 1A team.

Hughes, an Angelo State signee, led Christoval to the regional semifinals, where the Lady Cougars narrowly lost to No 3-ranked Farwell. They upset No. 5 Whiteface the previous round.

Hughes averaged 16.7 points per game, along with 5.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.5 steals

Whitworth led Mason to the regional final. She averaged 18.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.4 blocks.

Stanton, who led San Saba to the state final, led the area in scoring with 21 points per game. She averaged 6.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 4.0 steals and 3.7 deflections.

Callaway, who led Irion County to the regional final, averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.2 steals. She was a 42% 3-point shooter.

Appleton helped Richland Springs reach the area round, where the Lady Coyotes had a close loss against No. 2 Broaddus.
