San Saba Girls’ Late Comeback Falls Short Against Nocona in State Final

 

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The No. 14-ranked San Saba girls basketball team made one final charge before falling 54-37 to No. 8 Nocona on Thursday night in the Class 2A Division I state final at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

San Saba trailed by 16 points early in the third quarter, and the Lady Armadillos were still down 35-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

San Saba then cut the deficit to six points at 35-29 before the Lady Indians finished strong to secure their first state title in basketball.

Nocona was led by Megyn Meekins with 30 points.

The Lady Indians finished 32-6, while San Saba’s season ended with a record of 32-7.

San Saba was led by senior Cinzlea Stanton with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while junior Chassidy Gonzales had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

San Saba had won 17 straight games to reach the state final. The Lady Armadillos’ five playoff wins were all by 18 points or more.

This was San Saba’s first-ever trip to the state final. The Lady Armadillos had previously reached the state semifinals in 2022 and 2011.
