SAN ANGELO, TX — District rivals Water Valley and Garden City will meet in a Class 1A Division I regional final at 6 p.m. Friday at Angelo State’s Junell Center.
The two boys basketball teams finished tied for third place in District 11-1A, but they’ve each made their way through the bracket to reach the Region II final.
Water Valley came back from a 14-0 deficit Tuesday to upset No. 9-ranked Munday 46-40 in the regional semifinals.
Meanwhile, Garden City’s Texas Brinkley scored 37 points to power the Bearkats to a 64-48 win over Hamlin in their regional semifinal.
One of these West Texas schools will now move on to the state semifinals.
Garden City won both matchups with Water Valley in district play, 50-33 and 53-48.
Overall, District 11-1A has hauled in 10 playoff trophies. District champ Irion County won two playoff games before running into No. 1 Jayton on Tuesday in a 68-44 loss. Runner-up Robert Lee also won a pair of postseason contests before losing in overtime 50-46 to Benjamin.
Garden City has a 19-15 record and has won nine straight games. In addition to Brinkley’s 37 points against Hamlin, Jesiah Talamantes scored 9, Levi Easterling had 8 and Presley Jost added 7.
Water Valley (17-6) had a late start to basketball season after its run to the state semifinals in football.
The Wildcats were led Tuesday by Landon Lacy with 17 points. Branson Lacy had 13 and Boston Wiese had 12.
