TYLER, TX — The No. 5-ranked Angelo State University softball team split a doubleheader on the road against No. 1 UT Tyler on Monday.
The Rambelles lost the opener 13-2 but bounced back for a 3-2 win in the nightcap, snapping the Patriots’ 26-game winning streak.
It was the Belles’ first-ever win in Tyler.
ASU pitcher Cheyenne Floyd allowed only four hits and two runs to pick up the win in the second game. She walked five batters and struck out three.
She recorded the game’s final out with a strikeout and a runner on first.
Erin Plunkett went 3 for 4 in the game to lead ASU’s offense. Laylonna Applin, who hit a two-run home run in the first game, stole home to give the Belles a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Plunkett scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning.
This is the Belles' fourth win over a ranked opponent this season and their first win over the top-ranked team in the country since a 3-2, eight-inning victory over UT Tyler in San Angelo on March 25, 2022.
ASU is now 15-3 overall and 6-2 in Lone Star Conference play. The Belles are back home this weekend to host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday and Texas A&M International for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.
