BALLINGER, TX — The No. 18-ranked Irion County girls basketball team rolled to a 90-7 win over Lohn on Tuesday to open the playoffs.
The Lady Hornets had a balanced attack with five players scoring in double digits, led by Kaylie Streicher with 19 points.
Acelyn Fowler, Presli Cormier and Berkley Callaway each had 14 points, while Baylee Rainey added 11.
“We played fundamental, we played very unselfish, and that’s what we want to do, with a lot of energy and effort and a good attitude,” Irion County head coach Don Coffell said.
The Lady Hornets improved to 28-6 and move on to the area round against Balmorhea (18-10) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Big Lake.
Lohn, which won a fourth-place tiebreaker over Panther Creek to earn its way into the playoffs, finished its season with a record of 10-14.
It was the 12th win in a row for Irion County, which reached the regional semifinals last season and is eyeing another deep playoff run.
“The sky’s the limit. I think we’re capable of making a real long run,” Coffell said. “There’s some favorites out there, and if we run into some of the favorites, we’re going to see if we can knock them off and get to San Antonio. That’s where we want to be.”
Coffell said it’s been a dream season in Mertzon with a quality group of girls who have had a lot of success.
“It’s been pretty awesome,” Coffell said. “We’ve had a few little lows, but we’ve learned from the losses, and that’s what makes you better. This is just a wonderful, amazing, phenomenal group of young ladies. They’re good young ladies as in good citizens and just good people. They’re willing to learn and work, and they work their tail off. I’m very proud of them, and they make my job not a job. It’s a lot of fun coaching these girls.”
