Angelo State Softball to Host Annual Tournament This Weekend

SAN ANGELO, TX — The No. 11-ranked Angelo State University softball team opens its home schedule this weekend when it hosts the ASU George and Ola McCorkle Challenge Presented by West Texas Steel on Friday-Sunday at Mayer Field.

ASU will play Missouri Western at 3:30 p.m. Friday to begin the tournament, followed by a game against Ouachita Baptist scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

The Belles will play the same two teams Saturday — Missouri Western at 1:15 p.m. and Ouachita Baptist at 3:30 p.m. — before their tournament finale at 1:15 p.m. Sunday against Texas A&M International.

ASU went 5-0 last weekend at the DII First Pitch Invitational in Conroe, claiming wins over Regis, Pittsburg State, No. 21 Colorado Mesa, Colorado School of Mines and Southeastern Oklahoma.

The Belles allowed only two runs in 31 innings.

Sophomore shortstop Laylonna Applin was named the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Division II Player of the Week for her huge weekend in Conroe. She went 10 of 15 at the plate with three home runs, three doubles, two triples and 14 RBIs.

Senior right-hander Cheyenne Floyd opened the season with the program's first no-hitter since 2017 in the Belles’ 8-0 run-rule win over Regis.

Floyd recorded 13 of her 15 outs via strikeout and carried a perfect game into the fifth inning.

ASU head coach Travis Scott is closing in on 1,000 career wins. He currently sits at 977. He is seventh among all NCAA Division II coaches in wins, 23rd among coaches across all three divisions, and 14th in winning percentage. He won his first 101 games at Southeastern Oklahoma before winning the next 876 wins at ASU.
