Three Wall Hawks Sign to Play at the Next Level

WALL, TX — Three members of the Wall Hawks Football team put pen to paper on Wednesday, February 5, to sign with universities to continue their athletic careers at the next level. Friends, family, and fellow students crowded the gym at Wall High School to celebrate these three young men's academic and athletic achievements for National Signing Day.

The Hawks' Brylan White and Briggs Jones signed with Angelo State to play football, with Jones also signing to run track. Emmett Marlatt signed to continue his football career with Hardin-Simmons University.

Wall's Head Football and Track Coach, Craig Slaughter, spoke about his athletes after signing. Watch that interview below:

White was a force on the defensive side of the football for the Hawks over the years. He was a four-year Varsity player for Wall and was one of the leaders on the team that advanced to the State Semifinals against eventual State Champion Gunter late last year. White is staying home in San Angelo for his college ball. The young man signed to play for Coach Jeff Girsch and the Angelo State Rams.

It is rare to see. Any athlete in high school with the talent to play at the next level. It is almost unheard of for an athlete to be talented enough to sign with a school for multiple sports. Jones is that kind of athlete. One of the most dynamic skill position players for the Hawks' playoff run last season, Briggs is also a record-setting track athlete. He holds several school records at Wall for his performances a season ago out on the track, including Triple-Jump, 100-meter dash, and as a member of the 4x200-meter relay.

Here is Briggs Jones's thoughts about Angelo State on National Signing Day:

The big men on the o-line rarely get a chance to step into the limelight. Offensive line work isn't glamorous or flashy, but it is essential. Any team with a bad offensive line has zero chance to ever go the distance. The Wall Hawks did not have that problem last season. As a member of the o-line, Marlatt was a force in the run and passing game.

Hawks' quarterback Landon York rarely scrambled; in fact, he hardly ever had to move out of the pocket, in part thanks to guys like Marlatt. The promising offensive linemen signed to play at the next level with Hardin-Simmons on Wednesday. He has a passion for the game that shows in his work ethic, and he should be a player to watch out for in the seasons to come.
