CHRISTOVAL, TX— The Christoval Lady Cougars beat the Ozona Lady Lions and have the playoffs on the horizon.
On Tuesday night, the Christoval Lady Cougars battled the Ozona Lady Lions, winning the “Clash of the Cats”, 49-32.
In a game between the district's top two teams, the Lady Cougars had a huge first and third quarter to get past their biggest obstacle on their way to a district championship.
Lady Cougars head coach Brad Blalock knew what was on the line and also that Ozona was extremely talented and prepared.
The Lady Lions are led by senior Kelyn Gass and longtime head coach Jerry McSherry, who has coached throughout the Concho Valley but is in his first year with Ozona. Other than Gass and Delaney McGee, this Ozona team is young, featuring three sophomore starters, Emily Shaffer, Avery Davidson, and Aaliyah Renteria, and a freshman off the bench, Mia Webb.
Christoval jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter, as senior Halle Hughes had eight points, and Madyson George, Sophia Nemec, and Kaylin Workman each sunk 3-point shots.
Going into halftime, the Lady Cougars had a comfortable lead, 28-11.
Christoval would only grow that lead with a big third quarter, where they scored 17 points. George sank a 3-point shot, Natalie Brooks hit two 3-pointers, Hughes had a 3 and a two-point shot, and Nemec hit a jump shot and a free throw.
Christoval had a 45-15 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lions picked things up in a big way from there, outscoring Christoval 17-4 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to pull them ahead. Gass left the game with an injury in the fourth as well.
Webb and McGee each had six points in the fourth. Renteria and Kelynn Bean added two points, and Marina Contreras made a free throw.
For Christoval, Thomason hit a three and Hughes added a free throw to bring her total points to 18.
