SAN ANGELO, TX — Shemar Smith, Carvell Teasett and Sterling Gaston-Chapman combined to score 58 of the Angelo State Rams’ points in a 72-68 win over Midwestern State on Thursday night at the Junell Center.
Midwestern had one of the best records in the Lone Star Conference, and the Mustangs were receiving votes in national polls.
The Rams needed the win more, however, and they played like it, especially down the stretch.
After Midwestern closed to within 70-68 with four seconds remaining, ASU’s Smith knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the win.
The Rams improved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in LSC play. Midwestern dropped to 11-4, 6-3.
Smith and Teasett each scored 20 points, and Gaston-Chapman had 18.
ASU will play again at 3 p.m. Saturday at home against Lubbock Christian.
