Sweetwater Football Coach Russell Lucas Announces Retirement

 

SWEETWATER, TX — Russell Lucas, the athletic director and head football coach at Sweetwater High School, announced his retirement Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025.

Lucas compiled a 161-85 record in 21 seasons during stops at Sweetwater, Rotan and Hamlin.

His biggest success came at Hamlin, where he led the Pied Pipers to numerous deep playoff runs, highlighted by an appearance in the state final in 2019.

Lucas was 118-43 in 13 seasons with Hamlin.

He took the Sweetwater job in 2021 and had a 22-23 record. The Mustangs were 6-5 last year in their first season after dropping to Class 3A Division I.
