Christoval Sweeps Sonora in District Matchups

 

CHRISTOVAL, TX— The Christoval Cougars and Lady Cougars beat the Sonora Broncos and Lady Broncos in their district matchups on Friday.

Starting with the Lady Cougars, the experienced group led by senior Halle Hughes beat the young Lady Broncos, 63-31.

Full Metal Hughes led the Lady Cougars with 23 points, and Madyson George followed that performance with 14 points. Christoval outscored the Lady Broncos in three quarters with Sonora scoring nine in the fourth to the Lady Cougars' eight.

The Lady Broncos couldn’t overcome the senior-led Lady Cougars but had two freshmen start for them, building for a fruitful future.

The Lady Cougars are 6-0 in district play, followed by the Ozona Lady Lions who are 5-1. Also, this Christoval team is 20-7 overall but surprisingly not ranked. They returned all five starters from last year's team that reached the regional semifinals.

Going through their schedule so far, the Lady Cougars have beaten 2A San Saba, ranked 20th, 5A Lubbock Cooper, 6A San Angelo Central, 5A Abilene Cooper, and 1A No. 13 Garden City.

The Lady Cougars' seven losses are all to ranked teams.

After the game, second-year Lady Cougars head coach Brad Blalock said his team is battle tested and used the tournament season to get ready to make a deep playoff run again. They’ve already seen a ton of different basketball at all levels.

The Christoval Cougars also beat the Broncos right after the girls game, 59-49. Right up to halftime, the Broncos were giving the Cougars a run. It wasn’t until just before halftime that the Cougars built a seven-point lead.

The Cougars held on to beat the Broncos in the end behind strong games from Bruce Cooper, Camdin Balderas, and Ethan Busch, who had 22, 15, and 13 points, respectively. They are also first in their district with a 4-0 record, a game ahead of Forsan.
