MILES, TX — The Miles girls basketball team cruised past Colorado City 46-28 on Friday to remain in a tie for first place in District 8-2A.
The Lady Bulldogs were coming off a 42-41 win over district leader Roscoe on Tuesday that shook up the standings and kept them in the mix for the title.
Miles didn’t let down Friday and led comfortably most of the night.
“That (Roscoe win) was huge for us. It ended up putting us in a three-way tie with Ballinger and Roscoe,” Miles head coach Menda Mund said. “I thought we did a good job tonight. We did what we needed to do to win, but I think there’s some things we definitely need to work on, which we’ll be ready to work on that on Monday. But I think overall we did a great job.”
Miles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held a 15-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs allowed only one point in the second quarter en route to a 25-10 halftime lead.
Miles’ teamwork was superb as the Lady Bulldogs set up easy baskets with one assist after another.
“They’re playing really well as a team,” Mund said. “They’ve improved greatly since the beginning of the year, and I’m really proud of what I’m seeing. They’re moving the ball, and it’s just a total team effort for sure.”
Kate Hohensee had 11 points to lead Miles, while Ally Matheny and Beth Kellermeier each had 8.
Colorado City’s Lyla Ramon hit four 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 14 points.
Miles improved to 13-7 overall and 5-1 in district. Colorado City fell to 6-13, 2-4.
Miles will begin the second half of district play Tuesday at home against Coleman. Colorado City will visit Winters in its next game.
The Lady Bulldogs have key battles down the road with Ballinger and Roscoe, both of which will be on Miles’ home court.
Miles will host Ballinger on Jan. 21 and Roscoe on Jan. 31.
“I think we’ve definitely got to come every day ready to work, the same as these other teams. They have some great coaches and great players, and they’re going to come ready to work. So we’ve definitely got to bring our A game every time,” Mund said.
