Columbus Trounces Malakoff to Claim 3A Div I Title

 

ARLINGTON, TX — The Columbus Cardinals battled the defending 3A Division I Champion Malakoff Tigers on Thursday, December 19, for a 2024 State Championship. Ex-Benjamin Mustang Grayson Rigdon and the rest of the Columbus offense scored early and often to win in dominant fashion, 48-14.

Rigdon transferred to Columbus over the past year and now plays running back for the Cardinals. Rigdon had an excellent first half against the Tigers. He carried the rock 13 times for 88 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first two quarters.

Columbus and Malakoff traded opening touchdowns before the Cardinals completely took over the game. While Malakoff punted the ball three times, Columbus, in comparison, scored a touchdown every time they touched the football.

In the 2nd half, Malakoff showed flashes of explosiveness on offense, but Columbus continued to stonewall the Tigers on the Cardinals' half of the field.

Columbus scored three more touchdowns in the final two quarters, including one more from Rigdon (4 total), to run away with a solid victory.

Malakoff managed to score a final touchdown with under three minutes to play in the 4th quarter.
