ARLINGTON, TX – The Jayton Jaybirds capped off a perfect 15-0 season in spectacular fashion on Wednesday, dominating Oakwood 54-8 to secure the 1A Division II State Championship at AT&T Stadium. The win marks Jayton’s first state title since 1984, solidifying their place as one of the greatest teams in the program’s history.

The Jaybirds set the tone early with a defensive stand that forced a crucial three-and-out on Oakwood’s opening drive. A mishandled punt by the Panthers led to Jayton taking over at the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Bode Ham fumbled, but Colt Gentry recovered the ball in the end zone for the game’s first score.
The contest’s defining moment came during Oakwood’s second drive. The Panthers pushed deep into Jayton territory, reaching the 3-yard line with a chance to tie the game at 8-8. Instead, Gentry made another game-changing play by forcing a fumble, scooping it up, and sprinting 76 yards for a touchdown. This defensive highlight gave Jayton a commanding 16-0 lead, and they never looked back.
Quarterback Sean Stanaland added to the offensive onslaught with four touchdowns, ensuring the Jaybirds put the game out of reach by halftime.
On the defensive side, Colt Gentry was unstoppable, earning Defensive MVP Honors with six tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries returned for touchdowns. His standout performance was critical in shutting down Oakwood’s offensive efforts.
