GARDEN CITY, TX — The Water Valley football team advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in program history with a 70-38 win over Westbrook on Friday.
Westbrook had played in three straight state finals and was the back-to-back state champion in 2021 and ‘22.
Westbrook jumped out to a 16-0 lead after returning a fumble for a touchdown, but Water Valley fought back to get in front 24-22 by the end of the first quarter and 48-30 at halftime.
Water Valley’s defense posted a third-quarter shutout to take a 62-30 lead into the final frame.
Westbrook’s offense had scored 116 and 98 points the previous two weeks, making Water Valley’s defensive performance all the more impressive.
Water Valley recovered six fumbles, while only turning the ball over once.
Westbrook’s season ends with a record of 10-3.
Water Valley (11-2) moves on to the Class 1A Division I state semifinals against Whiteface at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lamesa.
Water Valley's top rusher, Anthony Quintana, was limited to eight carries for 29 yards, and two catches for 23 yards.
While Westbrook keyed on Quintana, Water Valley showed its balance with big games from Landon Lacy and Boston Wiese.
Lacy threw for 212 yards and four TDs on 15-of-24 passing. He also had 18 carries for 105 rushing yards and three TDs.
Wiese had six catches for 104 yards and two TDs, along with two TD runs. He was in on 22 tackles to lead the defense.
Gunnar Brooks added seven catches for 69 yards and two TDs.
