Mason Punchers Upset by Marlin With Last-Minute TD

CEDAR PARK, TX — The No. 6-ranked Mason Punchers lost a back-and-forth battle with Marlin, 40-37, on Friday in their Class 2A Division I regional semifinal football game.

Marlin’s Jordan Womack had a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:53 remaining for the game-winning score.

Mason fumbled on its final drive to allow Marlin to hang on for the win.

The Punchers’ season ended with a record of 11-2. Marlin improved to 10-3 and advanced to play Ganado in the regional final.

Mason had won 11 games in a row entering the contest, and all of those wins were by 23 points or more.

When Mason jumped out to an 18-7 lead, it looked as if the Punchers might be on their way to another comfortable win.

However, Mason had three turnovers in the second half, which helped Marlin take a 33-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mason quarterback Carlton Schmit had a TD run to pull his team within 33-31. Then the Punchers’ defense made a huge stand on the 8-yard line with 5:30 remaining.

Mason drove 92 yards to take a 37-33 lead on another TD run by Schmidt with 3:37 to play, but the Punchers couldn’t hang on.

Schmidt and Sutton Silerio each had three TD runs.
