Westbrook and Robert Lee Have 6th-Highest Scoring Football Game in Texas History

MERTZON, TX — No. 7-ranked Westbrook and Robert Lee had a shootout for the ages Friday in their first-round playoff matchup.

When the dust settled, Westbrook escaped with a 116-110 win in what is the sixth-highest scoring game in the history of Texas high school football, according to sixmanfootball.com.

The 226 combined points are the second-most ever for public schools behind Campbell and Fannindel's 247 points in 2017, a 125-122 win for Campbell.

The state record is 260 points in a 148-112 win for Bellville Faith over Waco Valor Prep in a matchup of private schools earlier this year.

Westbrook and Robert Lee were on pace to break the record at the end of the third quarter with Westbrook holding a 108-102 lead, but the game suddenly slowed down with only two scores in the fourth quarter.

Robert Lee's Brenner Sherwood threw for 370 yards and six touchdowns on 25-of-35 passing, and he rushed for 258 yards and seven TDs on 14 carries. He also returned a kickoff for a TD.

All told, Sherwood produced 628 yards of offense and had a hand in all 14 of his team's TDs.

Nate Samaniego had eight catches for 160 yards and four TDs, while Lucas Martinez connected on 13 of 14 PATs.

Westbrook was led by Grayson Jeffrey, who ran for seven TDs and threw for two more. Case Custer added three rushing TDs and a TD catch.

Robert Lee left no doubt that it was one of the better teams in the state by hanging with state power Westbrook. The Steers' season ended with a 7-4 record.

Westbrook (9-2) advances to play Newcastle next week.
