WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks wrapped up the District 4-3A Division II title Friday with a 57-7 win over Stanton at Hawk Stadium at Clayton Weishuhn Field.
Wall took command from the start and rolled to a 43-0 halftime lead, looking every bit like the No. 5-ranked team in the state.
The Hawks finished the regular season 9-1 overall and 4-0 in district. Stanton fell to 5-4, 2-2.
Wall will open the playoffs next week at home against Anthony. The game is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15.
Wall head coach Craig Slaughter said he's ready to see what his team can do in the playoffs.
"We think we're a strong team. We play clean. We know we're one of the best teams in 3A," Slaughter said. "We're going to play until there's no one left to play. And if it doesn't go our way, I hope it's a death match that we came out on the wrong end of. We're fixing to show the state how good we are. We know we're in the discussion."
Wall scored on five of its six possessions in the first half Friday. The only drive that didn't result in a touchdown was due to a fumble inside Stanton's 10-yard line.
The Hawks have had five games this year without a turnover, along with four other games with only one turnover.
The only exception was a six-turnover game against Idalou. Even then, Wall's defense rose to the occasion by allowing only 10 points. The Hawks are giving up an average of 12 points per game.
"We've done a great job taking care of the ball. We have a lot of talented players, and I love the way we're playing," Slaughter said. "I still think there's another level of physicality we can take it to on offense and defense, but I love where we are."
Wall faced a third-and-23 on its opening drive, but the Hawks took care of that by handing the ball to Briggs Jones, who scored on a 30-yard run.
Jones later scored on a highlight-reel 83-yard punt return to give Wall a 22-0 lead on the opening play of the second quarter.
Wall quarterback Landon York was 22-of-26 passing for 258 yards and three TDs.
"I was a little worried coming off that bye. We hadn't played in two weeks. It felt like we hadn't played in a month," Slaughter said. "But I thought the kids were sharp and played pretty clean, and we're proud of them."
Kellan Oliver had six catches for 89 yards and a TD, while Evan Boehle had four catches for 57 yards and two TDs. Bryson McFardon had five catches for 63 yards.
Jager Thompson, Andrew Ornelas and Kyler Oneal all added TD runs.
Stanton was led by running back Kameron Isemann, who had 26 carries for a hard-fought 129 yards.
The Buffaloes found the end zone midway through the fourth quarter when Jake Benedict hit Jayden Hinojosa for a 15-yard TD pass on a fourth-and-11.
