Friday Night Rewind: Best Games, Biggest Wins and Top Performers From Last Week

Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:

Best game: Robert Lee-Veribest

With a playoff spot on the line, Robert Lee and Veribest put on a show that wasn’t settled until the final minutes in a 76-63 win. Robert Lee’s Brenner Sherwood had a hand in 10 touchdowns, while Veribest’s Bryce Martin played a part in eight TDs. Sherwood’s final score gave Robert Lee the breathing room it needed to hang on for the win.

Biggest win: San Angelo Central

The Central Bobcats put an end to an 11-game district losing streak with its 23-13 win over Odessa High last week. The Bobcats have been eliminated from playoff contention, but they continued their improvement from last season’s 1-9 campaign with their fourth win of the year.

Biggest surprise: Christoval

The Christoval Cougars shook up the standings in District 3-2A Division I with a 20-13 win over Sonora. Christoval can lock up a playoff spot with a win over Ozona this week. Otherwise, the Cougars will need help to get into the postseason.

Case for the defense: Junction

With Junction’s 55-0 win over La Pryor, the Eagles posted their third shutout of the season to improve to 8-1. Junction’s offense is averaging 46 points per game, while its defense is allowing less than 11 points.

Strong in defeat: Veribest

For the second consecutive year, the Veribest Falcons will miss the playoff despite having a memorable season. Veribest went 7-3 last year on the way to a third-place finish in district, and they’ll finish with the same record this season if they defeat Irion County this week. They showed they could hang with playoff-bound Robert Lee on Friday, but they fell just short.
