Friday Night Rewind: Best Games, Biggest Wins and Top Performers From Last Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performers from last week’s high school football action in West Texas:

Best game: San Angelo Central-Odessa Permian

The Central Bobcats had the undefeated Permian Panthers on the ropes Friday at a raucous San Angelo Stadium, but they couldn’t finish them off. Permian rallied from a 23-14 third-quarter deficit to take a 31-23 lead, but Central quarterback Christian English had an electrifying 74-yard TD run with 2:02 remaining that nearly forced overtime. The ensuing two-point try failed, however, and Permian escaped with a 31-29 win.

Biggest win: Junction

The Junction Eagles are chasing their first district title in 21 years, and they cleared perhaps their biggest hurdle with a 38-14 win over defending district champ Brackettville. Junction is now 6-1 overall and 3-0 in District 14-2A Division II.

Biggest surprise: Brady

The Brady Bulldogs manhandled Eastland 47-7 in a result that was stunningly lopsided. Eastland showed what it was capable of just two weeks in a one-point loss to state-ranked Hawley, but the Mavericks were overmatched against Brady. The Bulldogs are riding a five-game winning streak, and they improved their record to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in District 5-3A Division II.

Case for the defense: Ozona

The Ozona Lions slowed down Sonora’s offense in a 30-6 win. Sonora had averaged 42 points per game during a four-game winning streak, but the Lions stepped up with one of their best defensive showings of the season to bounce back after a 44-28 loss to Reagan County in their district opener.

Strong in defeat: Blackwell

The Blackwell Hornets lit up the scoreboard with 84 points, but it still wasn’t enough in an 86-84 loss to Loraine. Blackwell fell to 2-6, but the fight the Hornets showed should give them some confidence as they fight for a playoff spot in upcoming games against Bronte and Trent.
