LIMA, PERU - Braden Peiser, a San Angelo native, claimed the title of 2024 Junior World Champion in Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions on Oct. 1 during the Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru, as announced by USA Shooting.
“It is a bit surreal,” Peiser said about his big win. “I have been in a lot of finals and quite a few international finals. I was enjoying this final and the chase. It was fun sitting in second or third and knowing I had some work to do.”
Peiser’s victory came after an intense final where he surpassed Sweden’s Victor Lindgren. The final included 15 shots each in kneeling and prone positions, followed by 10 in standing. In the elimination rounds, Peiser needed to make up .2 points to move from second place to first. His last shot, a 10.7, secured his gold after Lindgren shot a 10.4.
“Victor took his shot, and I could hear the crowd cheering. I could not see his score because I was already looking down my sights,” said Peiser about his final shot. “I knew I needed a good shot. I took it and felt confident in it. It felt like an hour until it popped up on the screen. When I saw it, I was ecstatic and happy that it was where I thought it was.”
This was Peiser’s fifth Junior World Championships and his first individual gold medal. He also took bronze in Men’s 10m Air Rifle and silver in Men’s 10m Air Rifle Team, bringing his total World Championship medal count to seven.
“This is the one that I felt the most prepared for going in and I felt like I was the most comfortable in the match and in the finals,” said Peiser, who shoots for the University of Kentucky.
Other American competitors in the event included Griffin Lake, who finished sixth, and Tyler Wee, who finished eighth. The U.S. continues to compete in rifle, pistol, and shotgun events through Oct. 7, with the current medal count at 10.
