Lake View Chiefs Look for Back-to-Back Wins on Thursday in Lubbock

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs can’t spend too long enjoying last week’s big win over Lamesa.

The Chiefs have to shift their focus for a quick turnaround with a road game Thursday at Class 5A Lubbock High.

It will be a tough test for a Lake View team that just snapped an 11-game losing streak, but the Chiefs have shown their mettle already this year.

They had spirited comebacks in two losses to start the year, and they finally put it all together in a 55-42 win last week.

“It was refreshing,” Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. “It was good to see the kids get a victory. They work hard every day, so it was good to see that.”

Sophomore quarterback Chris Alvizo continued his eye-opening start to the season by throwing for 337 yards on 21-of-30 passing.

He threw five TD passes to five different receivers, all in the first half.

Alvizo took over as Lake View’s starting QB midway through the first game after an injury to Auston Perez, and he has been nothing short of outstanding.

In two starts, Alvizo has thrown for 690 yards and nine TDs. He has also rushed for 173 yards and two TDs this season.

“He does a great job. He knows when to run, and he knows how to distribute the ball to every receiver, which makes it more exciting for those kids, because they never know when they’re going to get the ball,” Guevara said.

Braylon White had five catches for 94 yards and a TD, and Cristian Esparza had three catches for 90 yards and a TD. Both players also had an interception, including a 77-yard return for a TD by White.

Sammy Ramirez had 17 carries for 77 rushing yards and two TDs, along with a 20-yard TD catch.

Lake View’s offense was turnover free, while the Chiefs’ defense forced four turnovers.

Lubbock High is off to a 2-1 start. After the Westerners opened with a 49-28 loss to Hereford, they have earned wins over Big Spring (31-20) and Snyder (27-26).

Snyder is a common opponent as Lake View lost to the Tigers 40-34 on a last-minute TD in San Angelo in Week 2.

“It’ll be tough,” Guevara said of Thursday’s matchup. “Coach (Juan Rodriguez) does a good job down there. They’re big and they run the ball well. Defensively, they rally to the ball really well. So we’ve got to continue to control what we can control within ourselves and just play ball.”

Much of Lubbock High’s offense goes through running back Braiden Dunkerson, who has 79 carries for 536 yards and six TDs, along with 10 catches for 83 yards.

This is the first of three straight road games for Lake View, which will also play at Levelland and Burnet before its next home game Sept. 11 against Brownfield.
