Wall Falls to Brownwood in Defensive Battle

 

WALL, TX — The Wall Hawks held their own against Class 4A state power Brownwood for three quarters Friday.

In the fourth quarter, Brownwood finally proved to be too much.

The Lions broke away from a 7-7 deadlock in the final quarter for a 17-7 win at Hawk Stadium at Clayton Weishuhn Field.

Wall, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A Division II, was taking on a Brownwood team that has nearly triple its enrollment. The Lions are ranked No. 7 in 4A Division I.

Wall actually jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Landon York to Reid Robertson, but the Lions answered right back to tie the game before halftime.

A field goal gave Brownwood a 10-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Lions put the game away with a TD with about five minutes to play.

In his second game as Wall's starting quarterback in the Hawks' new spread offense, York was 14-of-24 passing for 90 yards and a TD with one interception.

Robertson had four catches for 53 yards and a TD. Wall's top wideout, Briggs Jones, was held to two catches for 14 yards.

As a team, Wall managed only 45 rushing yards on 23 carries.

Ethan Michalewicz had a team-high 11 tackles to lead Wall's defense, while Garrett Guy had 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack.

Lane Stansberry also had a strong game with eight tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks. Scandolari Weston had nine tackles and two tackles for loss.

Gavin Sissom added eight tackles.

Standout defensive end Bryan White was limited to six tackles and two tackles for loss.

Wall (1-1) will host Jim Ned next week, while Brownwood will be at home against Glen Rose.
