SAN ANGELO — The Lake View Chiefs have shown a lot of heart and the ability to put up a lot of points the first two weeks this season.
Despite all the positives, the Chiefs are still searching for a win.
Lake View held an early 14-0 lead against Snyder on Friday and was up 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Tigers escaped San Angelo Stadium with a wild 40-34 victory.
Snyder scored the winning touchdown with 55 seconds left on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Aedyn Claxton to Daenin Smith. It was a sensational play in which Claxton was in the grasp of a Lake View defender, but he managed to get the ball away, and then Smith did the rest with a spin move that shed two would-be tacklers.
Lake View was coming off a 30-27 loss to Fort Stockton last week. That one carried more feeling of a moral victory after the Chiefs rallied from a 30-7 deficit.
Friday's loss to Snyder felt more like one that got away.
"It's tough to take," Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. "I can't take anything away from Snyder. They made some great plays at the end. We've just got to keep playing. Our kids showed a lot of grit and a lot of composure. We've just got to keep playing and keep getting better."
Lake View's 14-0 lead disappeared when Snyder scored twice in the final three minutes of the second quarter to tie the game 14-14 at halftime.
Lake View then fell behind 34-21 in a disastrous start to the fourth quarter when Snyder scored 14 points in 24 seconds.
The Chiefs responded, however, with a 92-yard touchdown drive, capped by Chris Rodela's second TD catch of the game.
After Lake View's defense came up with a huge fourth-down stop, the Chiefs scored the very next play on a 63-yard screen pass from Chris Alvizo to Braylon White to tie the game at 34-34 with 4:47 remaining.
Alvizo, a sophomore making his first start, threw for 343 yards and four TDs, while rushing for 95 yards and a TD.
"He's learning as he goes," Guevara said of his promising young QB. "He's getting more reps, and he knows the playbook. He's just got to get those game reps and get experience, but I'm proud of him."
Francisco Ramirez had five catches for 140 yards and a TD (along with an interception on defense), Rodela had five catches for 97 yards and two TDs, and White had three catches for 79 yards and a TD.
Smith led Snyder with 29 carries for 169 yards and two TDs. His only catch was the game-winning TD.
Lake View fell to 0-2, while Snyder improved to 1-1.
The Chiefs will host Lamesa next week. Snyder will be at home against Lubbock High.
