SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs came up short in their season opener last week, but they hope to carry the momentum from that game into this week.
After falling behind 30-7 at Fort Stockton, Lake View stormed back and scored the game’s final 20 points in a 30-27 loss.
Chiefs head coach Hector Guevara didn’t like the way the game began, but he was encouraged by how it ended.
“As a coaching staff, we were pleased to see the boys battle back and put themselves in a position to win the ball game after the way we started,” Guevara said. “It was good to see the character of the team.”
Lake View will make its home debut at 7 p.m. Friday against Snyder at San Angelo Stadium.
Interestingly, it was a sophomore quarterback, Chris Alvizo, who helped lead last week’s comeback.
Senior Auston Perez was injured early in the game, Guevara said, and Perez tried to battle through it before coaches decided it was time to take him off the field.
Perez was 13-of-22 passing for 155 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Alvizo came in and didn’t play like a sophomore in Week 1. He was 13-of-18 passing for 195 yards and two TDs with one INT.
He also had 12 carries for a team-high 58 yards and a TD.
“He showed a lot of grit,” Guevara said of Alvizo. “He came in there in a tough situation. We were down by 14, I believe, when he came in, and he just took the reins and the kids rallied around him.”
Guevara said he’s not sure yet if Perez will be healthy enough to play this week or what the Chiefs’ QB situation will look like.
Whoever is under center, Lake View wide receivers Braylon White and Francisco Ramirez each showed what they were capable of last week.
White had 12 catches for 150 yards and a TD, while Ramirez had 11 catches for 149 yards and a TD.
Lake View will host a Snyder team that is coming off a 41-7 loss to Pecos in its season opener.
The Tigers returned only eight lettermen from last year’s 3-7 team, so it was expected they might get off to a slow start this season.
Snyder managed only 71 yards of offense last week while allowing 516 yards.
This is the first of back-to-back home games for the Chiefs, who will host Lamesa next week.
Lake View is searching for its first win since beating Lamesa 49-8 in last year’s season opener.
